Crochet Resources: Amazing Crochet Textures

Note: this is a sponsored post, but I actually think it can help folks, so bear with me ;)

Recently I kept tabs on how many emails I was getting for pattern support each week and what their basic questions were. Number 1 on the list were issues relating to reading patterns, something I have written about before. Second, was about the construction of short rows in garment design.

Third on the list was about creating cables and post (or raised stitches). The Wolf pattern from Crochet at Play has proven to be one of my most popular designs, but has also proven to be tricky for some folk learning both garment construction and how to do cables.

There is no doubt that raised stitches and cables can be hard to get your head around if you’ve never done it before. Photo tutorials are great, obviously I am a fan having written hundreds, but Crochet Camp is making me increasingly aware that some people find videos easier to follow.

Enter Drew Emborsky’s (aka The Crochet Dude) free Craftsy class, Amazing Crochet Textures. It covers the basics of post stitches and a simple cable to get you on the way to crocheting more complex patterns. It comes with a pattern for a blanket you can make as you go, as well as walking you through reading charts – super helpful if you are a more visual learner as well as foundation stitches – something I use a lot in my designs.

It’s no secret that I love online classes and I have taken a number of Craftsy’s – all of which have been excellent quality and, importantly, actually run on our poor rural broadband.  However, its worth noting that the pace of them can be quite slow and if you are looking for an answer for a specific problem, it can be hard to find in the video format. However, the platform makes it easy to push ahead or to dip in and out for what you need. There is also a forum for the class, so you can ask questions as needed.
