Sleep

Sleep is like the unicorn – it is rumored to exist, but I doubt I will see any.

It was probably 3.5 years ago that I last was able to rely on a decent night's sleep.  I was pregnant with Ellis and my life-long battle with insomnia became entrenched behaviour.

Then came Ellis...life was just too much to miss through sleep and so, he didn't.  Waking anywhere from hourly as a baby to 4-5 times a night as a toddler, our sleeping arrangements were usually ad hoc and most often involved small feet stuck in my face, toys stuck in my back and Kevin sleeping anywhere except our bed.

When discussions in toddler groups inevitably turned to our children's nightly behaviours, I usually stayed silent.  Or worse, when newer mothers asked for sleep advice, I tended to turn pale and change the subject.

True, I could have done something...had him cry it out, tried one of the 6.500 patented methods to get him to sleep (my library account does show a certain trend towards "how to get your baby to sleep" books).  But the reality is that I don't take direction well and, quite frankly, I was just too tired to try.

And then came Georgia.  The little lady is so laid back, she seems to have shifted the sleep balance for all of us.  Not only does she sleep though the night (for now), but her arrival herald's Ellis first consistent bout of sleeping through IN HIS OWN BED ever.  I almost feel guilty looking so well refreshed with a newborn in the house.

He even naps!!

You know, I may be a general failure on the whole sleep front, done absolutely everything "wrong', but I am going to enjoy every minute while it lasts.  If you need me, I'll be upstairs snoring in a celebratory manner.

I wanted to say a big thank you to whoever has been nominating the blog for the MAD blog awards.  I had missed that this was all going on and I am just so thrilled to see that people have taken the time to vote for Slugs on the Refrigerator!!  Thank you thank you thank you!  I am tickled to be nominated and honored to be in such fantastic company.  While I still don't know how I feel about competition in blogging, I am really touched by the nominations.  There is still time to vote for your favourite blogs for shortlisting.
